Woodpecker

Welcome to Woodpecker!

Dear Parents and Carers

Over the last term, the children have been learning their Set 1 sounds in Phonics. They have been practising reading simple CVC words by segmenting the sounds and then blending the sounds together. For example, c-a-t cat. The children have also been learning common high frequency words (red words), many of which cannot be sounded out, such as ‘the, to, said, he, she, me, be, go, come’. Please continue to support your child with learning these tricky words.

In Literacy we have been reading a variety of texts, both fiction and non-fiction. The children particularly enjoyed reading ‘Stanley’s Stick’ and ‘Stick Man’, as they used their imagination to think of different things a stick could turn into. For example, a magic wand or javelin! During English and Outdoor Learning Focus Week, the children read ‘The Gruffalo’ and acted out the story in the garden. They created a WANTED poster to capture the Gruffalo. The children read and retold ‘The Three Little Pigs, then created a story map using their phonic knowledge to label the pictures. Whilst learning about Bonfire Night, we learnt about Guy Fawkes by reading an information text. The children now understand that information can be retrieved from books and computers.

In Maths the children have been counting objects and actions. They have been finding the total number of items in two groups by counting all of them. The children have also been adding single digit numbers using Numicon to help them. In maths we have also been finding one more or one less from a group of objects. As well as building mathematical fluency with numbers, the children have been using mathematical terms to describe ‘flat’ 2D shapes (circle, triangle, square, rectangle). They have created many repeating patterns using shapes, objects and colours.

The children have observed seasonal changes in Forest School. They have noticed how the trees and plants have changed over the autumn term. The children have become more confident passing and handling a rugby ball in Tag Rugby using a ‘pocket to rocket’ pass and always holding the ball with 2 hands.

Please remember to check our weekly Reception notice which is saved under Children, Class Pages, Reception, Year Group Notice, Weekly Diary.

Thank you for your continued support.
