Cassiobury Infant and Nursery School

Learning together, growing together; inspiring our children in their journey through life.

Reception

Our Reception follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory Framework which sets the standards that school and childcare providers must meet for the learning, development and care of children from birth to five years old.

The framework:

  • sets the standards that all early year providers must meet to ensure that the children learn and develop well
  • ensures children are kept healthy and safe
  • ensures that children have the knowledge and skills they need for the next stage of their learning

Our Reception Environment

Our Reception comprises of three classrooms situated in an Early Years' building which is shared with the Nursery class. The classrooms all have access to the outside area allowing for free flow between the indoor and outdoor learning environments during our Busy Learning Time (child initiated learning).

Learning in Reception occurs through a variety of ways; Adult Led whole class sessions, group activities, Busy Learning Time, Challenges and One to One interactions. In addition the children also enjoy weekly Forest School Sessions where they are able to explore the natural surroundings and habitat and PE sessions. We aim to keep our days as similar as possible to provide structure and security for the children. A typical day will consist of the following: Morning: a welcome busy fingers related activity and registration, Literacy or Topic whole class session, Busy Learning Time and Phonics (Read Write Inc) in small groups. Afternoon: Maths Meeting or Question of the Day, Maths whole class session, Busy Learning Time, Story. Adult Directed small group activities occur throughout the week.

During Busy Learning Time (BLT) the children can choose to learn from a range of readily available resources in the classroom such as the Maths games area, construction, music and role play.  There are also challenges available in Literacy, Maths, Creative and Investigation which are changed regularly through the week. We use Mini-Mes to help focus children to visit activities that they wouldn't usually explore and to enable them to take their learning further.
